Villa Astu Two

A stylish riverside retreat among the rice fields.

est. on a river bend, Desa Beraban ★ 4.70, 3 guest reviews

astu · sanskrit · “so be it”

The name is a quiet blessing. Set among working rice paddies with the river close enough to hear, Villa Astu Two is built for the slow rhythm of Bali - light through a woven ceiling, birds over the water, nowhere you need to be.

The larger of the two sister villas, Villa Astu Two puts a mezzanine bedroom over an open living room and wraps both in glass. Rice fields on three sides, tropical birds and butterflies, minutes from the beach and the cafés and still well clear of the crowds.

budaya · culture

Live a while inside Tri Hita Karana

Balinese life balances three harmonies. Staying in a village like Beraban, you don't watch them from a distance, you're gently inside them.

Parhyangan

harmony with the divine

Canang sari, small palm-leaf offerings with flowers and incense, appear on gates, cars and the beach every morning. Step around them, never over. At temples, a sarong and sash are required; the inner courtyards are for worshippers.

Pawongan

harmony among people

The banjar, the village council, runs ceremonies, security and daily life. Processions may close a road for an hour; it's a privilege, not a delay. A smile and a slow nod open every door in Beraban.

Palemahan

harmony with nature

The paddies around the villa follow the subak, Bali's thousand-year-old UNESCO-listed irrigation cooperative. Planting, flooding and harvest change the view with the seasons; the frogs sing loudest after rain.

Why everyone shares four names

Balinese first names run by birth order, not gender: Wayan, Made, Nyoman, Ketut, then back to Wayan for a fifth child. Putu, Kadek and Komang do the same job in other families. So the driver, the chef and the neighbour may all be Made, and nobody finds it confusing.

How a Balinese home is arranged

Every compound is oriented kaja to kelod, mountain to sea, with the family temple in the mountain-facing corner. Just inside the gate you'll notice a short freestanding wall, the aling-aling: spirits travel in straight lines, so the wall makes them turn.

Dress & manners

Cover shoulders and knees at temples, use your right hand for giving and receiving, and keep beachwear for the beach. Bargaining at markets is friendly sport, smile while you do it.
